Although the speak the same language as the Brazilians, when the Portuguese speak it comes out more like Russian with a closed mouth and clipped accent. According to the Portuguese, 'the Brazilians speak before they think' whereas in Portugal it's the opposite.
Portugal can be a bit provincial in parts and tradition dies hard in the countryside. Lisbon is modern and lively though.
