Africa, long known as the Dark Continent was once upon a time a Green Continent, before the mad rush for land started by the European colonial powers. In the space of 30 years almost all of Africa had been occupied by European armies, intent on bleeding the continent to death. But of course, enlightening the heathen savages to the errors of their ways, at the same time. What selfless philanthropy.
Then when it came into fashion to give all the colonies independence in the 50's and 60's, the borders of the countries were drawn in such a way as to guarantee civil war and division, squeezing tribes together under the banner of one nation who had forever been at each other throats. The famine, corruption and war that Africa has seen in the last 40 years owe much to this farewell administrative present of their former conquerers.
A more cynical observer might conclude that it was a calculated policy designed to keep Africa from ever challenging the West economically, maintain them as a cheap labour source and an easy market to foister Western goods. Here at Road Junky we suspect it was probably just more philanthropy.
