The odd thing about the sexual roles in Thailand is that at first glance it seems like they’re reversed. Thai women, for all their petite, demure exteriors are often quite butch and practical, whereas Thai men can simper and speak with breathy voices that would get them cast as a woman on any radio show.
Farang men and women are a bit of a mystery for the Thais and it’s not certain just how sexy they find our body hair, excess flab and unwashed bodies – for we’re all unwashed compared to the average Thai who scrubs his or her body 2 or 3 times a day.
Thai Girls
God knows how many “men travel to Thailand for sex. From go-go bars to erotic massages to just finding a steady girlfriend 20 years younger than them, Thailand is top of the list. The women are beautiful, prices are low and everything would seem to be available in Thailand – for a price.
The mistake many men make in Thailand though when looking for a Thai girlfriend is looking in the bars. The bar girls are renowned for being relentless hustlers who take the poor farangs for all they have, getting them to send money when they’re working back home while they hustle another few guys at the same time.
Thailand is full of women who work and study and would never be seen dead anywhere near a dancing pole or wearing hot pants in a bar calling out ‘hey handsome, I love you long time’. It might take a bit more time to find a genuine Thai girlfriend but Thailand having a fairly materialistic culture, if you have a bit of money then you can’t go too far wrong. Thai women will want to know you can provide for her parents as well as for the children – that’s just part of the Thai gender roles.
Thai Men
Despite the effeminate appearance of some Thai men, most of them are as hard as nails when it comes to it, the Thais having always been something of a warrior race.
Thai men don’t have the best of reputations though when it comes to their attitudes towards women. Stories of domestic violence are common as are those of husbands who spend all the family’s money on drink or drugs. Date a university student though and you should be on safer ground.
