Travelers tend to do well when it comes to getting dates in Romania. Foreigners, both men and women are regarded as exotic and likely to have plenty of money, making them the ideal boyfriend or girlfriend.
There is no such thing as dating in Romania. You ‘meet’ with a guy or girl for a movie, coffee, drink or just go for a walk together. If you go out a second and third time, you can consider yourself together.
You’re likely to hook up with other Romanians under the influence of alcohol, be it at a bar or at someone’s house and then if you’re lucky you’ll get a phone number. Then you forget the 3 day rule (or even the neurotic New York 7 day rule) and call the very next day. If a guy doesn’t call a girl immediately, it means he has no interest and she’ll just move on.
Any foreigner that has visited Romania will tell you one thing: Romania has beautiful women. Women in Romania are famous for being good looking, fashionable, smart and turn into good wives – that is, there’s a strong culture of women taking care of the house and children, cooking and washing smelly socks.
Brought up in a culture where to be a wife is a good in itself, many Romanian women find it hard to be without a boyfriend and will go from guy to guy, without ever finding out who they are in between.
Romanian girls start marrying around 22-23, even in the big cities, though it’s becoming increasingly common for women to want to build their own careers and have financial independence – yeah, Western values!
But still if a woman survives to the end of her 20’s without getting married, family, friends and neighbours will tend to start putting the pressure on and matching them up with potential husbands – a common cause of complain in modern Romanian girls.
Romanian guys are generally nice, smart and the better ones know how to be romantic. However they can get a bit macho when they expect their women to take care of them and listen to all their problems.
They also tend to be quite clichéd in their tastes and like skinny, big-breasted women (preferably blondes) with long legs and mini skirts. It’s not unheard of for women to dye their hair blonde just to fit in with this fashion. If you’re a brunette, though, they’ll make an exception of you for being a foreigner.
