Cambodia's Party Beach

Sihanoukville is the party capital and main beach town of Cambodia. It’s as dirty as anywhere else, but the beaches themselves are decent enough. Sunset over the sea is a good time to sit down and take a break, though tourists, as usual, are constantly harassed and solicited. The town is rapidly growing, and with this development the beach just seems to get dirtier.

There are, however, quite a few diving operations that can take travelers out to remote locations where coral thrive. Another good option is to rent a kayak and paddle out to some of the uninhabited islands off the coast. Camping is a good option out there, but a hammock and mosquito net are essential, as there are no real beaches on most of the islands. The interior of the islands hold some of the best preserved forests in the immediate vicinity, and are possible to explore for a traveler with a machete, good boots, and an awareness of the jungle.

Sihanoukville is famous for its ganja, and it is the place in Cambodia to buy cheap, high quality bud… at least for most of the year. There are a lot of parties on the beach, and it’s not bad at all to go skinny dipping in the warm, tranquil waters of the Gulf of Thailand after getting hammered. Watch your stuff, though, and don’t do it alone if you’re a woman…
