European Rainbow Gatherings
The main European gathering happens every August and lasts a lunar cycle, starting from the new moon. Every year it’s held in a different country and at the end of each gathering its decided where to hold the next one. Gatherings start with a seed camp of 20-200 people where people lay the foundations for the influx of hippies. By the full moon they may be anywhere between 1000-5000 people gathered to eat.
In addition there are national gatherings wherever the Rainbow family is strong. Italy has a gathering in July and Greece has two each year, in the spring and the autumn, and it’s possible to go from the European gathering straight on to the seed camp for the Greek Rainbow and then over to Israel for the Rainbow gathering around October/November.
USA Rainbows
There are many gatherings all over the States and the national events can get so huge that they gain the status of a small town with tens of thousands turning up. Obviously, these need more planning and cooperation with the local authorities than the usual gathering. At these national events it’s not uncommon to see US guardsmen wandering around but the Rainbow have their own police, typically large, fluffy freaks with dreadlocks who will warn troublemakers that they must ‘control their minds’.
These gatherings are too big for central food circles and there are kitchens to be found everywhere, many of them run by Born Again Christians, Hare Krishnas or evangelical Buddhists, all keen to exchange food for the spread of their faith.
Information on upcoming gatherings can be found at www.welcomehome.org
World Gatherings
There’s also usually a Rainbow gathering once every year or two in some international location, often in time to coincide with an eclipse. Then you see the shamans working overtime to appease the Great Spirit.
