Check the fine-print in your travel insurance – cycling is often in the dangerous activities category – so if you need to make a medical claim, make sure the police report doesn’t mention you were cycling at the time. Naturally, you might want to insure the bike too, if it’s worth it.

Certain countries will also like to know that you are cycling across them, and with some it is best not to mention bikes at all (China, being one). Don’t assume you’ll be let across a border on a bike, though generally it’s only an issue in places that have quite sensitive borders.
