This legendary tabletop mountain, set on the tri-border between Venezuela, Brazil and Guyana, forces warm Atlantic air to rise sharply and condense into rain. Standing in the surreal lunar landscape atop the mountain plateau, you can actually see the moist air rising and forming into droplets of rain; it feels like you are standing inside a giant rain generator.

There are some fascinating and bizarre rock formations, most notably those found in The Valley of the Penises – no prizes for guessing what the rocks there look like. Once the toilet humour wears off, make your way over to the Crystal Valley, where the ground and stream bed is white with quartz – quite magnificent, and well worth the two days’ hike.
