Craigslist – This is the original listings site where you find your jobs, apartments and romantic parters. It’s free to post non-comercial stuff and is your first stop when thinking of moving to the Bay Area in particular though it’s now spread across the country.
Tribe – This is a kind of a personalised craigslist and is still the domain of the funky Californians. Each time you add someone to you tribe you get all their contacts a well. So it functions as a kind of a listings service but within a network of turned on people. There’s also a million different tribes you can join from Lover of Asian Women to Carol Singing. This is high tech internet.
Burning Man – Still the wildest festival in the world, travelers and Americans alike head for one week of psychedelic art installations in the Black Rock Desert. The Burning Man community is huge in California and it’s enough to say of someone ‘oh, he’s a burner’ to get credit. There are also funky decompression parties in the Bay Area where everyone unites to relive the Burning Man spirit.
