Koh Chang and the nearby islands are one of Thailand’s nicest places. Koh Chang itself is covered in jungle and allows for some hiking into the interior for jungle rats with decent gear. A machete and a hammock are essential, but mosquito nets aren’t as necessary, at least during the dry season. There are a lot of beaches, but almost all are developed.

Koh Chang is packed with tourists during the dry season, and getting accommodation can be difficult. It is quite expensive compared to the rest of the Thailand, and the cheapest guesthouses rent for more than they would in Bangkok. Most of the food is imported from the mainland, so meals are rarely under 70 baht. Costs go up even more on the other islands in the archipelago.

It’s a fun place to hang around and party, especially on “Lonely Beach.” Beach raves lasting late into the night are good places to drink and dance, and if you’re lucky you might even convince that sexy Swedish backpacker to go skinny dipping with you…
