Siem Riep is in many ways a boom town. It receives more tourists than any other part of Cambodia, thanks to its proximity to Angkor Wat. It seems like something of an oasis after crossing the dusty, landmine-ridden plains from Thailand, a surreal mix of luxury hotels and seedy guesthouses. Drugs are as plentiful and available as anywhere, and tourists are constantly solicited for anything and everything. There’s a definitively weird vibe to the place, like something is happening just under the surface that you just can’t see… but that might just be the happy pizza…
The temples themselves are quite impressive, and worth a visit to anyone who decides to visit Cambodia. It’s surprising, actually, that a culture that is as disorganized and lazy as the Khmers could do something so magnificent, but it was certainly a product of a different age. A bicycle is a good way to get around and see all the different temples. There are a lot of tourists in the high season, but the land area of the complex is so big that a traveler can easily find himself alone in a nice place to light up a joint and contemplate life.
M.J Lloyd was born and raised on a small farm in rural Ohio. At the age of 18 he hit the road to Alaska with a meager savings and no plan. Over the next 2 years he wandered in search of real answers and a livable life. The journey has taken him through three continents, various loves, battles with the loneliness and insanity of the road, and extreme poverty. Though the lessons haven’t been easy, he has learned much from the trail, and has reached a much happier and more peaceful understanding on the nature of his life.
