Hostels, Hotels and Accommodation in Argentina

By Roadjunky, Posted Oct 03, 2006

Budget lodging throughout the country varies from expensive ($10+ a night) in Buenos Aires to cheaper ($3-$5) in areas like Cordoba. There is an extensive hosteling system, and there are even some YHI – International Youth Hostels in Argentina. Most hostels in Argentina are pleasant places to stay, comfortable, nicely constructed, with clean and decent bathrooms. It’s worth the few extra bucks not to get shocked like you will from the electric showerheads in Bolivia.

Many young Argentines went into business opening new hostels following the peso crash – their former employment had disappeared. The Palermo Viejo neighborhood of Buenos Aires is a nice place to stay. San Telmo has good and cheap places to stay near Plaza Dorrego. Stay away from the over-popular hostels in the center of town unless your idea of experiencing Argentina is getting pissed every night with obnoxious British travelers.

If you are considering a longer stay, one can rent an apartment very cheaply in Argentina. In Buenos Aires, you can find an unfurnished room in Palermo Hollywood for a mere $100 or so a month. You can get even cheaper deals in other places, sharing an apartment can bring your rent as low as $25 a month in the outlying cities. There may be some problems with arranging the lease but usually a few extra pesos greases the wheels.
