Sydney, Australia - Upbeat and Self-Absorbed

Sydney, Australia

Land of Oz

Sydney is the first experience many travelers have of Australia. The ‘Harbour City’ is a sexy urban metropolis of four million people. Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Sydney Opera House, the beaches and the harbor itself make Sydney one of the most attractive cities in the world.

The vibe is upbeat and self-absorbed, although visitors from large cities such as New York and London may find Sydney a little slow compared to their hometowns. Travelers mingle and visit the major tourist attractions. Sport is a big draw card and stadiums regularly fill will tens of thousands of people for sporting matches. Taronga Zoo is one of the best zoos in the world.

Popular Sydney beaches include Bondi, Tamarama (dubbed ‘Glamourama’ by locals for the celebrities who hang out there and the flesh on display), Cronulla, Manly and Palm Beach. The harbor itself is spectacular and a ferry ride through the harbor and up the Parramatta River is the perfect way to see the city.

Sydney’s west is a gritty, urban sprawl. Few travelers visit the western suburbs unless they pass through on their way to the Blue Mountains, a popular weekend destination for Sydneysiders sick of the rat race or those with an arty compulsion.
