Cuidado de la llama!
Basically, La Paz is the political centre of the country, and any traveller crossing Bolivia is certain to pass through at some point. The best that can be said for it is that it’s ‘not that bad,’ especially when compared to other capitals in the region. It has interesting artisan markets and is the main base for going into the mountains.
Copacabana is the place to stock up on all those drug needs before heading further into Bolivia from Peru. There is a big hippy scene in the town and it is really quite pleasant, sitting on the shores of Lake Titicaca.
Rurrenabaque is one of the cheapest and easiest places in the world to organize a journey into the jungle. You can go as deep as you want, some choosing up to a month with a native guide. When you come back to the hostel, you’ll hear plenty of Hebrew, as Israelis are ubiquitous.
Coroico is a popular destination for those who want to take their chances on reputedly the deadliest road in the world. It makes up a decent stopover on the way to Rurrenabaque, for those foolhardy or down and out travellers that make the 20 hour journey overland.
Rurrenabaque is where you get into thick, interminable jungle and get impossibly lost if you’re too cheap to hire a guide.
The Salar de Uyuni is one of the strangest places on earth, a mirror-like salt desert in the middle of the Altiplano.
M.J Lloyd was born and raised on a small farm in rural Ohio. At the age of 18 he hit the road to Alaska with a meager savings and no plan. Over the next 2 years he wandered in search of real answers and a livable life. The journey has taken him through three continents, various loves, battles with the loneliness and insanity of the road, and extreme poverty. Though the lessons haven’t been easy, he has learned much from the trail, and has reached a much happier and more peaceful understanding on the nature of his life.
