Lake Atitlan, Guatemala - Hippie Travel Scenes

By Roadjunky, Posted May 13, 2007

Lake Atitlan in Guatemala is one of the most magical places in the world that still escapes the ravages of the 21st century. Jump on a boat across this volcanic lake and you’re beyond the reach of cars, industry and even the internet in some villages.

Hippies tending towards the Luddite, the shores of Lake Atitlan have proved to be an attractive refuge from the modern world and the usual astrology workshops and healing centers can be found in some of the villages.

Lake Atitlan is a great place to make your own world in the jungle, gazing at the shifting light on the waters and the foreboding reflections of the volcanic mountains. Backpackers and hippies spend their days on the shores playing guitars, smoking herb with no fear of the police and hurling themselves into the lake.
