Moldova is the eastern region of Romania and is famous for its painted monasteries and which are World Heritage sites. The monasteries of Moldovita, Sucevita, Voronet, Humor and Putna are all worth checking out if you’re into your medieval painting.

The Black Sea is the Romanian Riviera. It’s expensive for most Romanians, who sometimes choose to spend their summers in cheaper Turkey and Greece. Some of the resorts are pretty upmarket and soulless whereas other villages like Vama Veche, close to the Bulgarian border have a more bohemian crowd with live concerts and people camping in tents on the beach.

If you’re looking to disappear into nature then the Danube Delta (http://www.romaniatourism.com/delta.html) is a great place to go with plenty of lush vegetation, quiet water channels and floating islands, serene scenery, hundreds of species of birds and fish, and hospitable people.
