Accommodation for the Traveler in the UK

Expensive. There exist hostels in London and elsewhere for $20 a night but you have to look around. You might easily pay double that for a night’s stay elsewhere in some grubby youth hostel.

Rent outside of London is around $400-700 a month for a room and in the capital you can expect to pay half as much again. The real crunch is that you may well be asked to leave $500-1000 deposit in case you trash the apartment. That won’t be the case though if you look for a room as a lodger in someone’s house.

Your best bet in London, at least, is to investigate the possibilites of living in your own squat.

The concept of the shower is fairly recent in England and many houses may only have a bath tub. Not withstanding the English have always been a hygienic people who washed at least twice a year whether they needed to or not.
