When visiting the travel or photography section of bookstores we often find that those wonderful ‘coffee table books’, which all travel photographers dream of publishing, are limited to a seemingly exclusive group of experienced and well-known photographers. The chances of publishers taking their chances on someone unknown are virtually zilch.

Self publishing has always been an option but a risky one. In the past a print run would have meant a photographer investing thousands and thousands in piles of books which might never sell.

Happily, there’s now an alternative in the shape of Print On Demand (POD) books. Using the service of a site like lulu.com, a single copy of your book of travel images can be printed up, posted off to the customer and a check comes to you at the end of the month. Without you having to lift a finger.

Your only obligation is to make sure the book is arranged and typeset as Lulu will simply print the file you send them regardless of its content. Then it’s up to you to market the book and let the world know it even exists – having your own website helps with that and you can show sample images there.
