Berlin Love Parade - World Festivals Guide

Sexy Parade of Love, Berlin

Back in 1989, the world was a changing place. The communist states were foundering and the bricks in the Berlin Wall looked frailer than ever. With this in mind, a free-thinking German by the name of ‘Dr. Motte’ set up a political demonstration/trance party promoting peace and international understanding and the Berlin Love Parade was born.

150 people turned up to strut their stuff and can it be a small coincidence that the Berlin Wall came down 4 months later? Either way, the festival became immensely popular and these days draws upwards of a million good-natured people to dance, take drugs, dress up (or just take everything off) and dance to techno.

The vibe on the Berlin Love Parade is awesome. It’s safe, friendly and about the only place in the world where you’ll see an entire city turned into a dance club. The basis of the Parade are the floats with water-cooled speakers turning out deafening trance, techno and house music – you can either follow your favourite DJ along or allow them all to pass you.

If you haven’t got the strength to dance all day in the July sun and then all night too (or you just can’t find the drugs to help you do so) then you can skip the parade and come at night where there are public and private raves as wild as anything you’re likely to find anywhere.

The Love Parades have caught on elsewhere and have established themselves in Tel Aviv, San Francisco, Santiago and Acapulco.
