Outer Mongolia - Travel in the Wilds Guide

Mongolian horses die young

Outer (or Inner for that matter) Mongolia is a land of sweeping green steppes and pastures with barely a tree in sight. The endless horizons invite speculation as to whether Genghis Khan began his bloody conquests just in search of a little firewood.

Mongolia is spectacular and vast and you need your own transport. A motorbike is a possibility but it can break down far from any mechanic and needs petrol all the time. So go the local way and get a horse – it feeds itself just about anywhere and the Mongolians will be more than happy to house you both at their communal yurts when you arrive at a new encampment each evening. Donations will be expected.

You could take the Trans-Siberian express as far as Ulan Bator in Mongolia and then find your way out from there. Some horse riding lessons might stand you well, as might a basic Mongolian vocabulary. Otherwise do your best to bring clothing to stand the cold winds.

You’ll want to head out into the wilds the moment you arrive in Mongolia as it’s full of pissed off displaced Chinese for whom being sent to Mongolia is about as bad as it gets.
