When people think of islands in the Pacific, the crowded, developed islands of Hawaii, Fiji and Tahiti come to mind. There are actually thousands upon thousands of islands, however, where no one lives at all and you can live out your Tom Hanks movie recreation fantasies.

The great thing about being out in the Pacific is that the rest of the world seems that much further away – an illusion in the age of flights and satellites but there’s still the physical sense of isolation in the middle of so much water.

There may not be much in the way of fresh water on some islands so your stay could be limited to how much food and liquid you bring with you. Also, unknown beaches may have wicked currents or poisonous wildlife – beware of swimming on surf beaches and ask the locals about other marine hazards like jellyfish, urchins or sharks before you head out.

To find your dream Pacific Island fly to somewhere like Fiji, Tahiti or the Solomon Islands and start checking out the hundreds of islands dotted around nearby. Your best bet will be to find somewhere not too far from a town where you can stock up on supplies.
