Why Dubai Should be Avoided

When you see this car roll up in Dubai, at all costs don't let him talk you into hopping into the rear. |

Isn’t it time to for the travel community to speak of Dubai as what it is – a glitzy dump glorified because of its oil-built towers but bereft of human decency?
From the NYTimes comes a story about a boy raped by Emirati men in Dubai, a city justifiably listed on Roadjunky’s 10 Worst Cities list. While rape unfortunately occurs throughout the world – in repressed UAE apparently:
The authorities not only discouraged [the boy] from pressing charges, he, his family and French diplomats say; they raised the possibility of charging him with criminal homosexual activity.
In fact he had to flee the country. We’ve heard similar stories in countries like Yemen of male travelers having to flee leering Arabs trolling in black cars with tinted windows.
Isn’t it time to for the travel community to speak of Dubai as what it is – a glitzy dump glorified because of its oil-built towers but bereft of human decency?
Instead many people speak of the city with a gleam in their eyes. The same look the words ‘Las Vegas’ invoke.
