Global Warming Travel Destinations of the Future

By Mark McCarthy, Posted Sep 02, 2007

antarctica surfing

Soon we'll be surfing warm water waves off the coast of Antarctica.

The sea level is rising. So who’s up for surfing Antarctica ? Is it too “Brangelina” to go to New Orleans ? Who wants to breaststroke over to St. Mark’s to go to the Venice clubs? With all the popular seaside resorts going under with the inevitable destruction of the world, human intervention or not, where do we go next?

My hometown, Boston , is below sea level, and it’s not in an elite class. All the fab beach locales are in jeopardy, from full moon parties to Ibiza clubbing. Yes, everything Al Gore tells us will come true.

Unless you’re enjoying the far north of India chances are the places that you are enjoying, headed to, or thinking about hitting up are in danger of being overrun with ocean. Since we’re not ready yet for cliff-diving classes on Everest, I would love to make a change while there is still time.

I’m nowhere near preaching. Can’t everyone reiterate to their respective governments that something should happen before all the recommendations we give are Scuba sites?

How do we, as Road Junkies, help a nearly impossible cause? Does it require our unified voice, a grassroots campaign, our hollow votes? What can we do to save what it is that we love most?

Or is it just inevitable that the backpackers will be taking surf class on the Ross Shelf? Think we can make a difference? Let the junkies know in the forums.
