Ernest Hemingway travels to Cuba, Spain, Africa

The machismo granddaddy of all travelers ever – Big Papa Ernest Hemingway

“To me heaven would be a big bull ring with me holding two barrera seats and a trout stream outside that no one else was allowed to fish in .”

Ernest Hemingway, perhaps the greatest American writer of all time, traveled the globe and set his stories around the world. From fishermen in Cuba to bullfighters in Spain, from big game hunters in Africa to hitmen in middle America, Ernest brought his movable feast inspired by the “Lost Generation” of ex-pat authors in Paris to vivid life in his work.

Hemingway lived a romanticized life, injured in WWI as an ambulance driver he went on to worldwide fame as an author through a start in journalism. He was a reknowned drinker and womanizer. His writings in The Sun Also Rises popularized the San Fermin running with the bulls festival in Spain. Hemingway spent much of his life moving around living in Cuba, Key West, and Idaho amongst others. Find out more about Hemingway in Cuba on cuba-junky.com.

Here are some famous Hemingway quotes:

“Never think that war, no matter how necessary, nor how justified, is not a crime.” “But in modern war … you die like a dog for no good reason.” “The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially. If you are none of these you can be sure that it will kill you too but there will be no special hurry.” “I know only that what is moral is what you feel good after and what is immoral is what you feel bad after.” “Cowardice, as distinguished from panic, is almost always simply a lack of ability to suspend the functioning of the imagination.” “Grace under pressure – definition of ‘guts’ “ “Always do sober what you said you’d do drunk. That will teach you to keep your mouth shut.”
