SWAE Sports - Adventure Travel at its Best

Upon arriving to Mexico after 2,000+ miles, Will, Dan and Elliott peer at the Gates of Hell outside of Tijuana.

SWAE Sports: Snow, Water, Air and Earth. They wanted to include Fire but that one hurts too much.

While it may be that a typical Road Junky agonizingly budgets a months-long journey, sleeping in cemeteries and on other peoples’ couches along the way, sometimes one feels left out of the adrenaline rush. Fact is, mountain/rock climbing, parasailing, and whitewater rafting are really freaking exciting. We were recently inspired by the founders at SWAE Sports, who seem to have brought their love for these types of extreme outdoor adventures to a new level.

In 2009, Daniel, Will and Elliott embarked on a 2,000 mile bike trip from Canada to Mexico, ballsy enough on its own, but also coupled the journey with promoting their new business. Networking with tour guides and other sustainability experts, they earned knowledge of how to launch a new type of tour company, one which would be both fun and work towards promoting conservation. SWAE Sports, Snow, Water, Air and Earth, uses the power of the Web to connect travelers seeking human-powered adventures with the right local guides. You won’t find motor-powered safaris on their site.

Their two-and-a-half month cycling trip brought them over mountain passes in the Cascades of Washington State, through the heated wastelands of Oregon (!), and down the entire coast of California to the border with Mexico. Upon arrival to Mexico they half-entertained the thought of ending it all with some tequila in Tijuana, but luckily didn’t go. They now have a website.

Road Junky doesn’t feature adventure travel very often, but these guys impressed us with the philosophy behind their venture. So if you’re looking to get intense, especially in the United States (for now,) you can use this widget to check out what they have to offer. Also, if you happen to be an adventure guide, let us know at editor AT roadjunky.com and we’ll refer you to their network. Happy adventures!

Road Junky is getting interactive!
