Country Guide Submissions
Thanks to the infinite space of the web, there’s no real limit to the size of a guide though we try and keep to a standard format in terms of sections.
We don’t do listings of restaurants or guesthouses as the big guidebooks do that well enough. The idea is for the road junky guides to really bring the experience of being in a place to the reader. We go beyond the cliches and write from the heart of subjectivity to give a personal perspective on a country. Whilst the guides are all subjective it’s best to keep a third person voice and make personal anecdotes those of ‘a traveler’.
The sections
The country
This is the intro page, a general overview of why anyone might want to come here and what they might expect to find. No dull history please, unless it;‘s humourous and relevant. It’s good to briefly mention the best places the destination has to offer. eg. the goa intro
The basics
This is where all the red tape tricks go – what happens if you overstay you visa etc. As well as the travel info for getting there and away, weather and your basics cia factbook info. eg. Pakistan info
The people
Leave all PC notions behind and describe the people who live here, warts and all. We’re not into prejudice but it’s perfectly okay to point out that the locals are sullen, superficial or mean if they are. Likewise if you;‘re in love with the inhabitants of a place let that shine through. eg. meet the moroccans_Travel in the destination _
This is where all the travel tips go. What is the experience of traveling in the country like? This is distinct from the intro as it takes everything from the traveler’s point of view. Include something on the female traveler. e.g. travel in iran
Dating
Predictably one of the more popular sections, no other guide dares write about this. Some humourous observations go down a long way here. Try to keep it balanced between a review of possibilities for men and women. e.g romance in israel
Work and money
How much does it cost to travel or live here? How can a traveler make a buck, legally or otherwise? All the tricks on saving cash should come in here, as well as the various scams and hustles. eg. working in japan
Health and safety
Will the local water kill you? Will the local hooligans beat you up? Will you go insane from smoking the local hallucinogenic? All questions of health and drugs should come in here. eg. staying saf in brazil
transport
Let us know about how to get to that country and away again – i.e. a rough idea of flight prices, which countries it borders etc
then let us know about getting around that country on buses, trains and taxis e.g. are you risking your life each time you do so. Don’t forget to mention hitchhiking!
accommodation
Here let us know what kind of accommodation is around and how much it’s likely to cost. We don’t want specific places, just a general run down.
Also include some info for the traveler who’s looking to stick around and get an apartment – how to find one, rents, ideosncrasies of renting in that country etc
Destinations
This is an overview of the country’s destinations and the main places should have their own page i.e. run for a few paragraphs to justify a page to themselves. eg. http://www.roadjunky.com/brazil/rio_brazil.shtml Otherwise all the places you cover will be grouped into one destinations section. eg russia destinations
Other sections
If you have any subject close to your heart feel free to add extra sections. such as drink and drugs in russiaIf you have a lot more you want to write though we are starting culture guides as an offshoot such as israeli culture
