Video: the Dhobi Ghats – the Laundry Wallahs of Bombay

Thousands of people washing tons of dirty laundry in public. Well, this is Mumbai..

Mumbai film maker, Parasher, documents the traditional Dhobi Ghats in Mumbai, India, the outdoor laundry where 20,000 washermen and women thrash clothes to death against stone to beat out all those curry stains.

One is reminded of Mark Twain’s quote about the dhoti, the traditional cloth worn around the waist, observiing that ‘the dhoti is an ingenius device used to break rocks’.
